OLONGAPO — 2014 · Murder
The Killing of Jennifer Laude
On 11 October 2014, Jennifer Laude, a 26-year-old transgender woman, was found dead in a motel room in Olongapo. A US Marine in port for joint exercises was soon identified as the suspect, and a dispute over his custody under the Philippines–US Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) escalated. On 1 December 2015 the Olongapo Regional Trial Court convicted him of homicide. In September 2020 the court ordered his release for good conduct; days later President Duterte pardoned him, and he was deported on 13 September 2020. The case became a symbol in debates over LGBT rights and the presence of foreign troops in the country.
