CALAUAN — 1993 · Murder
The Sarmenta–Gomez Murders — The Calauan Mayor Case
On 28–29 June 1993 Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez, students at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, were abducted and killed. The investigation found the crimes had been committed by Antonio Sanchez, mayor of the town of Calauan in Laguna province, and his men. In 1995 the court convicted Sanchez as mastermind on seven counts of rape with homicide, sentencing him to reclusion perpetua (up to 40 years) on each count; the judge called the crime 'a plot seemingly hatched in hell'. In August 2019 revelations that he might be released early under a good-conduct law provoked a major public outcry, and the release was halted. Sanchez died in the prison hospital on 27 March 2021.
