ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

At around 07:45 on the morning of 18 January 1993, a huge avalanche struck the village of Üzengili in Bayburt province, at about 2,025 metres above sea level. The snow mass travelled some 4,150 metres before hitting the village. Fifty-nine people died, 21 were injured, 72 houses were destroyed and about 650 animals were killed. In the village, home to 355 people at the 1990 census, families who were at home that morning were buried by the snow. Rescue teams worked in harsh winter conditions. The disaster is recorded as one of the deadliest avalanches in Turkey. Because the avalanche risk persisted, the village was moved to a safer site. The victims are commemorated every 18 January.
