BINGÖL — 1993 · Major Tragedy
Bingöl Ambush of 24 May 1993
At around 18:00 on the evening of 24 May 1993, passenger buses were stopped by PKK militants on the Bingöl–Elazığ highway near the village of Bilaloğlu, about 13 kilometres from Bingöl. Soldiers travelling unarmed and in civilian clothes were taken off the buses; 33 soldiers were killed in the attack and 3 survived with injuries. Sources give differing figures for civilians who also died. The attack took place during a unilateral ceasefire the PKK had declared in March 1993 and brought that ceasefire to an end. A memorial known as Anıttepe, built in memory of the soldiers, was opened near the site on 30 June 2007. The attack is commemorated with official ceremonies on each anniversary.
