DAKAR — 1993 · Murder
The Assassination of Judge Babacar Sèye
Babacar Sèye, vice-president of Senegal's Constitutional Council, a lawyer and former mayor of Saint-Louis, was shot dead on 15 May 1993 on Dakar's Corniche Ouest as he was driven home in his official car. The killing came while the council was due to proclaim the results of the 9 May 1993 elections and caused intense political tension. Three men were arrested in May and June 1993 and in September 1994 were sentenced to between 18 and 20 years of hard labour. Opposition leaders were also charged for a time, but those charges were dropped in 1994. The convicted men were released in 2002 and amnestied under the Ezzan Law of 2005. Those who ordered the killing were never tried.
