PUERTO HURRACO — 1990 · Murder
The Puerto Hurraco Massacre
On the evening of 26 August 1990, two brothers opened fire in the street of Puerto Hurraco, a village in the municipality of Benquerencia de la Serena, province of Badajoz, killing nine people and wounding twelve. The dead included members of a family with whom the brothers' family had a feud going back generations, as well as two young girls. The feud dated to the 19th century and had been deepened by a killing in 1967 and a 1984 house fire in which the perpetrators' mother died. The brothers were caught the next morning and in 1994 each was sentenced to 342 years in prison. One died in Badajoz prison in 2006, the other in 2010. The event became a symbol of rural blood feuds in Spain.
