"Omar m'a tuer" — The Ghislaine Marchal Case

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Wealthy widow Ghislaine Marchal was found murdered in the cellar of her villa in Mougins in June 1991. The words 'Omar m'a tuer', grammatically incorrect, had been written in blood on a door at the scene. The villa's Moroccan gardener, Omar Raddad, was sentenced to 18 years in 1994, but who wrote the words and the shortcomings of the investigation provoked fierce debate in France. At the request of the King of Morocco, President Chirac granted a partial pardon in 1996 and Raddad was released in 1998. Years later, DNA traces of unknown men were found on evidence from the scene; even so, a request for a retrial was rejected for a second time in 2022. Raddad continues to maintain his innocence.
