The Olgiata Murder

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the morning of 10 July 1991, 42-year-old Countess Alberica Filo della Torre was found killed in the bedroom of her villa in the Olgiata residential estate north of Rome. Staff and children were in the house at the time, and the case became known as a 'locked room' mystery. Because of early investigative errors and poor examination of evidence, it remained unsolved for twenty years. In the late 2000s, at the request of the family and prosecutors, old evidence was re-examined, and DNA analysis pointed to a former domestic employee of the family. He confessed in April 2011 and in November 2011 was sentenced under a fast-track procedure to 16 years in prison.
