Murder of Igor Talkov

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Igor Talkov, one of the most popular rock singers of the late Soviet era, was shot in the chest during a backstage altercation at the Yubileyny Sports Palace in Leningrad (today St. Petersburg) on 6 October 1991. His death was mourned the next day as a national tragedy. Suspicion first fell on another performer's bodyguard, but the murder charge against him was dropped that same year. Examinations in 1992 indicated that the fatal shot was fired by the singer's former concert manager, who left the country, and the case was suspended. The investigation was reopened in November 2018, and in April 2025 a St. Petersburg court convicted the former manager in absentia and sentenced him to 13 years; the verdict was upheld in October 2025.
