The Mario Cerciello Rega case

On 26 July 2019, in Rome, 35-year-old Carabinieri officer Mario Cerciello Rega was stabbed to death while on duty. Two young American men were arrested in connection with the killing. In 2021, an Italian court sentenced both defendants to life imprisonment. The ruling was reviewed on appeal and the sentences were revised; the case became a subject of legal dispute between Italy and the United States.
