The Via Poma Murder

UnsolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 7 August 1990, 21-year-old Simonetta Cesaroni was found dead in the office of the Italian Youth Hostels Association (AIAG) on Via Poma in Rome's Prati district. The killing, committed in a closed office on a hot August day, became one of Italy's longest-running unsolved cases. Over the years many people were investigated, including building staff and the victim's former boyfriend; the ex-boyfriend was convicted at first instance but definitively acquitted on appeal and by the Court of Cassation. Everyone once under suspicion has been cleared. Renewed inquiries in the 2020s produced no usable evidence, and the killer has never been identified.
