PORDENONE — 1994 · Unsolved Case
The Italian Unabomber
Between 1994 and 2006, small explosive devices hidden inside everyday objects left in public places detonated more than thirty times across the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions. Concealed in items such as tubes, toys, food jars and beach gear, the devices injured more than twenty people, many of them children and elderly, though no one was killed. The press called the perpetrator the 'Italian Unabomber' after the American case. In an FBI-assisted inquiry, a local engineer was investigated as a suspect in 2006, but the case against him was dropped for lack of evidence and he was cleared. It is not even certain that one person carried out all the attacks; the bomber was never found.
