MEDELLÍN — 1994 · Murder
The Murder of Footballer Andrés Escobar
Andrés Escobar, a defender and one of the leaders of Colombia's national team, had played an unlucky part in the team's early exit from the 1994 World Cup with an own goal against the United States. He returned to Medellín a few days after the tournament. In the early hours of 2 July 1994, after an argument in the car park of the El Indio nightclub in the El Poblado district, he was shot dead. That same night a bodyguard with links to drug-trafficking circles was detained, and he confessed the next day. In June 1995 he was sentenced to 43 years; the sentence was later reduced to 26 years and he was released in 2005. Three others were acquitted.
