'Narcisazo' — The Disappearance of Narciso González
Lawyer, journalist, playwright and university lecturer Narciso González, known as 'Narcisazo', was an outspoken critic of Joaquín Balaguer's government. Shortly after harsh criticism of Balaguer amid the disputed 1994 elections, he left home on 26 May 1994 and never returned. His family and human rights groups alleged that he had been detained by military intelligence. He was never found and his body has never been recovered. In 2012 the Inter-American Court of Human Rights held the Dominican state responsible for his forced disappearance. Even so, no one has been prosecuted, and the case is remembered as a symbol of impunity.
