NEWBRIDGE — 1998 · Missing Person
The Disappearance of Deirdre Jacob
Deirdre Jacob, an 18-year-old trainee teacher studying in London, vanished in broad daylight on the afternoon of 28 July 1998, just metres from the entrance to her home in Newbridge, County Kildare. That day she had obtained a bank draft for her accommodation, visited the post office and was caught on CCTV several times. She was last seen at about 3 p.m. crossing the road towards the lane to her house. None of her belongings, including her bag, were ever found. Police took thousands of statements. In August 2018 the case became a murder investigation, and searches were carried out in Kildare in 2021. A new file went to the prosecutor, who decided in 2022 against bringing charges; the case remains open.
