The Aranykéz Street Bombing

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 2 July 1998 a bomb planted in a parked car exploded on Aranykéz Street in central Budapest. The target was a businessman who was a key witness in an organised-crime-linked fraud case; he, his lawyer and two bystanders were killed, and at least 25 people, including foreign tourists, were injured. It became known as the biggest mob vendetta in Hungarian history. The case remained open for more than a decade; a Slovak hitman arrested in 2008 received a life sentence for carrying out the bombing, and the man found to have instigated it was jailed for 13 years.
