OBERWART — 1995 · Murder
The Oberwart Bombing
On the night of 4-5 February 1995 four Roma men in Oberwart, Burgenland, were killed when they tried to remove a racist sign placed at the entrance to their settlement and a bomb attached to it exploded. The attack was the deadliest in a campaign of letter bombs between 1993 and 1995 targeting minorities and public figures who supported them in Austria and Germany. The perpetrator was caught in October 1997 near the Slovenian border when a bomb he was carrying went off. A court in Graz sentenced him to life imprisonment on 10 March 1999. It is remembered as Austria's deadliest racist attack since the Second World War.
