1995 Dinar Earthquake

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 1 October 1995 at 17:57 local time, an earthquake measuring 6.1-6.2 struck the Dinar district of Afyonkarahisar. Foreshocks felt in the area since 25-26 September had led some families to spend nights outdoors, which is believed to have limited the death toll. According to Kandilli records, 90 people died (94 in some sources), more than two hundred were injured and thousands of buildings were damaged. Besides the town centre, nearby settlements such as Yakaköy, Kızıllı and Yapağılı were badly affected. The disaster prompted debate over building settlements on fault lines and on unsuitable ground. In the following years thousands of new homes were built in the area and the town was largely rebuilt.
