BURDUR — 1971 · Major Tragedy
1971 Burdur Earthquake
On the morning of 12 May 1971, at 08:25, an earthquake recorded by Kandilli Observatory as magnitude 5.9 struck Burdur and its surroundings. Its epicentre lay among the villages southwest of Lake Burdur, and it was felt at intensity VIII. According to Kandilli Observatory's list of major earthquakes, 57 people died and 3,227 buildings were damaged, while hundreds were injured. Rural settlements built largely of adobe and rubble stone were hit hardest. Burdur had already been devastated in 1914 by an earthquake that killed around 300 people, and the 1971 disaster again highlighted the region's high seismic risk. Resettlement and housing works were carried out in the damaged villages afterwards. The event is recorded as one of the deadliest natural disasters in the recent history of Turkey's Lakes Region.
