ISTANBUL — 1971 · Murder
Kidnapping and killing of Israeli Consul Ephraim Elrom
Ephraim Elrom, Israel's Consul General in Istanbul, was kidnapped in Istanbul on 17 May 1971. The kidnappers belonged to an armed left-wing organisation of the period and made demands of the government. When the demands were not met, Elrom was found dead in an apartment in Nişantaşı on 23 May 1971. The event took place under the martial law declared after the military memorandum of 12 March 1971 and was widely covered by the international press. It is considered one of the first attacks on a diplomatic representative in Turkey.
