The Ayşe Tokyaz case
22-year-old university student Ayşe Tokyaz was killed in Istanbul's Küçükçekmece district; her body was found in a suitcase by the roadside in Eyüpsultan. The case caused a major public outcry. In the trial of 11 defendants before the Küçükçekmece 2nd Heavy Penal Court, the court convicted the main defendant, a former police officer, of 'intentionally and with premeditation killing a woman with monstrous intent by inflicting torment' and sentenced him to aggravated life imprisonment with no reduction whatsoever; he also received additional prison sentences for other offenses. One defendant was acquitted.
