BANDAR ABBAS — 2025 · Major Tragedy
Shahid Rajaee Port Explosion
On 26 April 2025, a fire at Shahid Rajaee Port near Bandar Abbas, Iran's largest container port, was followed by a powerful explosion. The blast was felt kilometres away, damaged surrounding buildings and started fires that burned for days. According to early state media figures at least 57 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured, and the toll rose in the following days. Experts and some officials suggested the blast may have been linked to containers said to hold chemicals used in rocket fuel, while Iranian officials pointed to safety negligence. The investigation into the exact cause and responsibility is ongoing.
