TEHRAN — 2020 · Major Tragedy
Shootdown of Ukraine International Airlines PS752
On the morning of 8 January 2020, Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752, a Boeing 737 from Tehran's Imam Khomeini Airport to Kyiv, crashed minutes after take-off, killing all 176 people on board. Most passengers were Iranian and Canadian citizens. It happened hours after Iran had fired missiles at US bases in Iraq, while its air defences were on high alert. Iranian officials initially denied missile claims, but on 11 January admitted that an air-defence system of the Revolutionary Guards had 'unintentionally' shot down the aircraft. Iran's later report listed a chain of human errors. In 2023 Canada, Ukraine, Sweden and the United Kingdom took Iran to the International Court of Justice.
