TEHRAN — 1998 · Murder
Iran Chain Murders
In autumn 1998 a series of killings targeted dissident intellectuals in Iran. In November opposition leader Dariush Forouhar and his wife Parvaneh Forouhar were killed at their Tehran home; soon after, writers Mohammad Mokhtari and Mohammad Jafar Pouyandeh disappeared and were found dead. Under public pressure, Iran's Intelligence Ministry announced in January 1999 that the murders had been committed by "rogue" elements within its ranks. The alleged ringleader reportedly died by suicide in prison. Ministry personnel were convicted in a closed trial, and some sentences were later reduced. Families say those who ordered the killings were never tried.
