DIYARBAKIR — 2002 · Murder
The Nahide Opuz case
Nahide Opuz and her mother, who lived in Diyarbakır, endured years of violence from Opuz's husband and repeatedly turned to the authorities. On 11 March 2002, while loading their belongings to move to İzmir, Opuz's mother was shot dead by the husband. In 2008 the local court reduced the life sentence it imposed and released the defendant. In 2009 the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Turkey had failed to protect a woman facing violence and had discriminated against her. The judgment became an important reference for the drafting of the Istanbul Convention.
