Death of Private Sevag Balıkçı
Sevag Balıkçı, a conscript of Armenian descent, was killed by a gun fired by another soldier at a gendarmerie outpost in the Kozluk district of Batman on 24 April 2011, while doing his military service. The death was initially treated as an accident. In the first trial in 2013, the defendant received 4 years and 5 months for negligent homicide. After the verdict was overturned, a retrial in January 2020 resulted in a 16-year-8-month sentence, upheld on 13 July 2021. The family had argued that the killing was intentional.
