MANDI BAHAUDDIN — 2011 · Unsolved Case
Murder of Journalist Saleem Shahzad
Syed Saleem Shahzad, Pakistan bureau chief of Asia Times Online, disappeared in Islamabad on 29 May 2011 on his way to a television programme. Shortly before, he had published a report on militant links inside the Pakistan Navy. His body was found two days later in a canal near Mandi Bahauddin, about 120 kilometres south of Islamabad, bearing signs of torture. A five-member commission of inquiry set up at the Supreme Court's request heard dozens of witnesses over six months, but its January 2012 report did not identify the killers. Police closed the investigation, saying no leads had been found. Press freedom groups have continued to call for an independent inquiry.
