DJERBA — 2002 · Major Tragedy
The Ghriba Synagogue Bombing
On 11 April 2002 a suicide attacker drove a natural-gas truck fitted with explosives at the historic El Ghriba Synagogue on the Tunisian island of Djerba. The truck exploded outside the synagogue. Nineteen people were killed, 14 Germans, three Tunisians and two French citizens, and more than 30 were injured. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility. Investigations reached into Germany, France and Spain; German citizen Christian Ganczarski was arrested in Paris in 2003 and in 2009 a French court sentenced him to 18 years for his role in the attack. Two people in Spain were also jailed for collaborating with a terrorist group.
