Sousse Beach Attack

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 26 June 2015, at the resort of Port El Kantaoui about 10 kilometres north of Sousse, Tunisia, a lone gunman opened fire on tourists on a hotel beach and around its pools. Thirty-eight people were killed, 30 of them British. The gunman was killed at the scene by security forces, and ISIL claimed the attack. It was the deadliest attack by a non-state actor in modern Tunisian history and, following the Bardo Museum attack three months earlier, devastated the country's tourism. A 2017 inquest in London ruled that the victims had been 'unlawfully killed' and sharply criticised the police response. The Tunisian government also acknowledged that the response had been slow.
