TUNIS — 2015 · Major Tragedy
The Bardo Museum Attack
Around midday on 18 March 2015, gunmen opened fire on visitors stepping off a tour bus outside the Bardo National Museum in Tunis and then entered the museum. Two attackers were killed when security forces intervened. Twenty-two people died, 21 foreign tourists and a Tunisian security officer, and more than 50 were injured. Islamic State claimed responsibility, while Tunisian authorities attributed the attack to a local militant group. In February 2019 a Tunisian court sentenced three defendants in the Bardo case to life imprisonment and others to various prison terms. Together with the Sousse attack later that year, it dealt a severe blow to the country's tourism.
