Murder of Rahma Lahmar
Rahma Lahmar, 29, disappeared on her way home from work in the Ain Zaghouan district of Tunis in September 2020; her body was found near the Jardins de Carthage on 25 September 2020. Authorities said a detained suspect had confessed to killing her to steal her phone, and that he had previously been tried in another murder case and freed. The killing caused widespread anger; crowds marched on the presidential palace demanding the death penalty, turning the case into a national debate on capital punishment. The case was later widened, with the investigating judge opening proceedings against more than thirty people. As of 2026 it has not been concluded.
