TUNIS — 2013 · Murder
Assassination of Chokri Belaid
Chokri Belaïd, a lawyer, opposition politician and leader of the left-secular Democratic Patriots' Movement, was shot as he left his home in the El Menzah 6 district of Tunis on the morning of 6 February 2013. He died at the clinic where he was taken. Belaïd had been a sharp critic of both the Ben Ali regime and the Islamist-led government that followed the revolution. It was the first killing of a politician in Tunisia since the 2011 revolution; it sparked nationwide protests and set off a political crisis in which the prime minister announced a caretaker government of technocrats. Twenty-three people were tried after a lengthy investigation. In March 2024 a Tunisian court sentenced four defendants to death and two to life imprisonment; five were acquitted.
