Death of Abdullah Cömert

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Abdullah Cömert, aged 22, died on the night of 3 June 2013 in Antakya during protests held in support of the Gezi Park movement. Although the cause of death was described in different ways at first, the investigation established that he had been killed when a tear gas cartridge fired from a police armoured vehicle struck him in the head. The investigation was completed in April 2014 and the police officer who fired the cartridge was put on trial. In the trial, Balıkesir 2nd High Criminal Court sentenced the officer to 13 years and 4 months; after appeal, the sentence was finalised as 6 years, 10 months and 15 days. In 2022 the Constitutional Court ruled that there had been no violation in the family's application concerning the effectiveness of the investigation.
