In Amenas Hostage Crisis

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the morning of 16 January 2013, about 32 armed militants, said to have come from Libya and Mali, attacked the Tigantourine gas facility south-west of In Amenas near the Libyan border, operated jointly by Sonatrach, BP and Statoil. They took hundreds of Algerian and foreign workers hostage. During the four-day crisis Algerian special forces stormed the site. At least 39 foreign hostages and an Algerian security guard were killed, and the true figure may be higher. Twenty-nine attackers were killed and three captured. A total of 685 Algerian and 107 foreign workers were freed. An al-Qaeda-linked group claimed the attack. The events were examined in detail through witness testimony at a coroner's inquest held in London in 2014-2015.
