Murder of Narendra Dabholkar

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Narendra Dabholkar, a 67-year-old doctor and activist known for campaigning against superstition, was shot dead by two men on a motorcycle while on his morning walk on Pune's Omkareshwar Bridge on 20 August 2013. Days after the killing, the Maharashtra government passed by ordinance the anti-black magic law he had championed for years. On the orders of the Bombay High Court, the case was handed to the CBI in 2014. Almost 11 years later, in May 2024, a special court in Pune sentenced the two gunmen to life imprisonment, while three defendants accused of being masterminds were acquitted for lack of evidence.
