PUNE — 1976 · Serial Murder
The Joshi-Abhyankar Murders
Between January 1976 and March 1977, ten people were killed in Pune. Behind the killings were four commercial art students at a college on the city's Tilak Road, a group known on campus for robbery and fights. The series began with the kidnapping of a classmate for ransom and continued with robbery-driven attacks on the homes of the Joshi and Abhyankar families. The killings spread deep fear in Pune. The four men were sentenced to death on 28 September 1978. The High Court and India's Supreme Court rejected their appeals and a plea for clemency was refused. They were hanged at Yerawada jail on 27 November 1983.
