The Disappearance of Teacher Elena Quinteros
Anarchist schoolteacher Elena Quinteros was detained at her home on 26 June 1976, during Uruguay's military dictatorship, and taken to a clandestine interrogation centre known as '300 Carlos'. Two days later she persuaded her captors to take her near the Venezuelan embassy, claiming she had a meeting there; she jumped the wall into the embassy grounds and asked for asylum. Uruguayan security agents dragged her away by force, struggling with embassy staff, and she was never seen again. Venezuela broke off diplomatic relations with Uruguay over the incident. Her body has never been found. In 2010 the dictatorship's former foreign minister was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in her disappearance.
