The Carrasco Murders — Uruguay's First Serial Killer

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Between 1992 and February 1993 three young women were killed in strikingly similar ways in and around Carrasco, an affluent district of Montevideo. The first killing, in January 1992, initially went unsolved; after two more murders, suspicion fell on a 22-year-old university student from the same neighbourhood, the son of a former diplomat. He fled to Brazil, was caught there and returned to Montevideo, and the first killing was also linked to him by the same method. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison, and the case is recorded as Uruguay's first documented serial murder case. He was released in 2016 before completing the full term, and the case continues to inspire documentaries and podcasts.
