DAYTONA BEACH — 1989 · Serial Murder
The Aileen Wuornos Case
Between November 1989 and November 1990, seven male motorists aged 40 to 65 were shot dead and robbed along highways in central Florida. The first victim was a 51-year-old electronics store owner from Clearwater whose car was found abandoned in Volusia County. Arrested at a bar near Daytona Beach in January 1991, Aileen Wuornos confessed to the killings; she first claimed self-defence and later abandoned that claim. She received death sentences for six of the murders and was executed on 9 October 2002. The case fuelled debate in the US about female serial killers and inspired the 2003 film 'Monster'.
