ST. CATHARINES — 1992 · Serial Murder
The Paul Bernardo Case
Between 1986 and 1990 Paul Bernardo carried out a series of sexual assaults in Toronto's Scarborough district and became known in the press as the 'Scarborough Rapist'. Later, together with his wife, he committed crimes that led to the deaths of three teenage girls in the Niagara region between 1990 and 1992, one of them his wife's younger sister. He was arrested in February 1993 after a DNA match. His wife struck a deal to testify against him in exchange for a 12-year manslaughter sentence; when videotapes of the crimes later surfaced, the deal became one of the most controversial prosecutorial decisions in Canadian history. Bernardo was convicted in September 1995, sentenced to life and declared a dangerous offender. His prison transfer in 2023 sparked fresh outrage.
