TEKIRDAĞ — 1992 · Major Tragedy
The Çorlu Factory Explosion (1992)
On 8 August 1992, a large explosion occurred at a leather factory in the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ. It was traced to methane that had built up in a poorly ventilated treatment system and in a large water tank beneath the canteen. Twenty-nine workers were killed and 86 people injured, although some sources give slightly different figures. The disaster drew public attention to occupational health and safety conditions in Thrace's fast-growing industrial zones, and in particular to the danger of gas accumulating in enclosed spaces. Accident chronologies of modern Turkey record it with 29 dead and 86 injured. It is still remembered in the local press, decades later, as Çorlu's "dark day" and one of the region's worst industrial accidents.
