BOIPATONG — 1992 · Major Tragedy
The Boipatong Massacre
On the night of 17 June 1992 the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Boipatong, near Vereeniging, was attacked by hundreds of armed men from the nearby KwaMadala hostel who were affiliated with the Inkatha Freedom Party. Forty-five people were killed and dozens seriously injured. The attack came during the CODESA negotiations to end apartheid; the ANC withdrew from the talks, alleging police complicity. In a 1993 criminal trial many IFP supporters were convicted. Findings on the role of the police remained disputed. The massacre is one of the gravest examples of political violence during the transition.
