The Ontario Teacher case

UnsolvedSources: CLast updated: 14 October 2026

In 1989, a female teacher was murdered in the Canadian province of Ontario. In 1991 a man was convicted of the murder. However, DNA testing on samples taken from the crime scene definitively excluded him. In January 2000, the Ontario Court of Appeal quashed the conviction. The exonerated man filed a lawsuit for compensation against the government; the case was stayed indefinitely in 2003. The real perpetrator of the murder was never identified.
