CIUDAD JUÁREZ — 1993 · Unsolved Case
The Ciudad Juárez Femicides
From the early 1990s hundreds of women and girls were killed or disappeared in Ciudad Juárez on the U.S. border. Many victims were young women working in the border assembly plants known as maquiladoras. Investigative negligence, lost evidence and allegations of coerced confessions drew heavy criticism. On 6 November 2001 the bodies of three young women were found in a cotton field in the city; five more were found nearby the next day. The case reached the Inter-American Court of Human Rights as the "Cotton Field" case. In 2009 the Court held Mexico responsible for failing to protect women and to investigate the killings. Most cases remain unsolved.
