Murder of Sabeen Mahmud

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Sabeen Mahmud, a human rights advocate who founded the Karachi cultural and debate space 'The Second Floor' (T2F), was shot dead in the Defence area on the evening of 24 April 2015 as she drove away after hosting a panel on enforced disappearances in Balochistan; her mother, who was with her, was wounded. The case was registered under anti-terrorism law. Counter-terrorism police soon arrested members of a militant cell that was also found to have carried out the Safoora Goth bus attack in Karachi that year. In 2016 a military court sentenced five defendants to death, but the sentences and appeals remained unresolved for years. Her family said it chose to keep her legacy alive rather than dwell on justice.
