Lynching of Mashal Khan
Mashal Khan, a 23-year-old journalism student at Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan, was shot and beaten to death on campus on 13 April 2017 by a crowd that had gathered over an allegation of blasphemy. Footage of the attack spread on social media and caused widespread outrage in Pakistan. Investigators found that the blasphemy accusations against him were unfounded and that his criticism of irregularities at the university had played a role in his being targeted. In February 2018 an anti-terrorism court in Haripur sentenced the gunman to death, five people to life and 25 to various prison terms, acquitting 26. On appeal the Peshawar High Court upheld the convictions but commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment.
