Daniel Pearl Case

ClosedSources: BLast updated: 14 October 2026

Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was abducted in Karachi on 23 January 2002 while working on a story about militant groups. Weeks later it emerged that he had been killed; his body was later found in an area in southern Karachi. In 2002 a British-Pakistani militant was sentenced to death and three aides to life imprisonment. However, the Sindh High Court overturned the murder convictions in 2020, and in January 2021 Pakistan's Supreme Court dismissed appeals by the Pearl family and the government and ordered the men's release. The ruling was sharply criticised by the US government, the family and press freedom groups.
