Murder of Poet Madhumita Shukla
Madhumita Shukla, a 24-year-old poet, was shot dead at her home in Lucknow's Paper Mill Colony on 9 May 2003. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) found that she had been in a relationship with a serving Uttar Pradesh state minister and was pregnant when she was killed. According to the investigation, the murder was the result of a conspiracy by the minister and his wife and was carried out by two gunmen. The minister was arrested in September 2003; the trial was moved to Uttarakhand over safety concerns, and in October 2007 the former minister, his wife and the gunmen were sentenced to life imprisonment. The couple were released early in August 2023 under the state's remission policy, and Shukla's sister challenged the decision in court.
