The Murder of Altynbek Sarsenbayuly
Former minister and ambassador Altynbek Sarsenbayuly, co-chairman of the opposition party Naghyz Ak Zhol, was found shot dead by a roadside outside Almaty on 13 February 2006, together with his bodyguard and driver. As the second opposition figure to die within a few months, his death caused an outcry. Five officers of the KNB security service's elite Arystan unit were soon arrested and the head of the KNB resigned. On 31 August 2006 ten defendants were convicted; a former security officer tried as the gunman was sentenced to death and the others received 3 to 20 years. The Supreme Court upheld the verdicts in December 2006, while the opposition maintained the killing was political.
