The Suspicious Death of Zamanbek Nurkadilov
Zamanbek Nurkadilov, a former mayor of Almaty who had also headed the Emergency Situations Agency, had been one of President Nazarbayev's harshest critics since March 2004. On the evening of 12 November 2005, about three weeks before the presidential election, he was found dead at his home in Almaty with three gunshot wounds and a revolver beside him. The official investigation concluded that it was suicide. His family's lawyer and the opposition, however, questioned whether a person could shoot himself three times. The killing of another opposition leader a few months later deepened suspicions about his death.
